MTE Delivers Contract for Sellafield Nuclear Decommissioning Site

We’re pleased to announce that we have recently completed a contract supplying two modularised stainless steel switchrooms and an HVAC solution to one of the UK’s largest and most complex nuclear site.

Awarded by Amec Foster Wheeler, now part of Wood Group, the work consisted of delivering our world-renowned safety solutions for the Magnox Swarf Storage Silos at Cumbrian based Sellafield.

MTE delivered a HVAC system solution as part of the decommissioning of the facility – one of the four highest priority nuclear clean-up projects in the UK. The programme involves retrieving waste from compartments within the silos which will then be treated to form an interim storage product.

As well as the HVAC ventilation solution, we recently delivered our bespoke turnkey service of designing, manufacturing and supplying the two modularised switchrooms, which underwent tests at our Darlington facilities. The switchrooms were designed to client specifications and featured stainless steel walls and a roof with a carbon steel base and support system. MTE was responsible for supplying the general electrics for these rooms including fire alarms, lights and HVAC.

Our Fit for Nuclear (F4N) accreditation was a compulsory requirement to work on the Sellafield site. As part of this, we demonstrated iour extensive operations meet the high standards required for nuclear in new build, operations and decommissioning.

In 2011 we successfully delivered a full turnkey modular solution to the Sellafield Nuclear Site. We designed, engineered and supplied a multi-story Buffer Storage module comprising four levels. Upon delivery MTE received a commendation in recognition on its very swift delivery, installing the modular solution in only a matter of two weeks.

We are extremely pleased to have worked on the Sellafield site again and we believe we were able to do so thanks to our capabilities of delivering our world class solutions in a short timeframe without compromising on quality. Our team of highly skilled engineers were fundamental in delivering this project to the highest possible standards.

Ichthys LNG Starts Supplying in Australia

We’re pleased to see that the Ichthys LNG has officially started to send through its production of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from its offshore location.

Total, one of the biggest international oil and gas companies, is working with various other companies on the project and has announced that the first cargo of LNG from Ichthys LNG has left Darwin, North Australia. LNG is currently being produced from the first liquefaction train from Ichthys with the second train expected to start within the next couple of weeks.

Ichthys LNG will hold over three billion barrels of oil including 500 million barrels of condensate from its base off the coast of Western Australia. The offshore facilitation and the two-train onshore liquefaction plant will supply 8.9 million tonnes of LNG per year as well as 100,000 barrels of condensate and 1.65 Mt/y of liquefied petroleum gas per year to Australia.

Having supplied our world class external fire and blast walls and modular solutions to be used on the project, we’re glad to see that the project is making headway. If you would like to read more about our work on the Ichthys LNG project, read our case study.

UK is Leading the Way in Offshore Wind Energy

Recent reports from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has shown that the North Sea is where 90% of global offshore wind farms are based. The impressive amount of renewable energy gained in this region has, according to the report, landed the UK as one of the top ‘pioneers in the sector.’

More good news from the research conducted revealed that many new renewable energy projects are able to now compete directly with fossil fuel powered electricity thanks to the decreasing cost of electricity. This leads to less reliance on fossil fuels in the energy industry helping to create a positive shift to cleaner energy to reduce climate change.

The report also detailed that in 2017, offshore wind generated 6% of the power used in the UK and that with government backing and investment this number could rise to 20% in the 2020s. The IRENA report also took note of how the recent Contract for Difference (CfD) has helped the UK to secure more offshore wind energy contracts. The Minister for Clean Growth and Climate Change mentioned earlier this year that, he would be supporting further CfD actions backed by a budget of £557 million.

The overall findings of the study, indicates that the UK is currently a global leader in offshore wind energy developments and with continued interest, research, development and investment could remain one of the leaders whilst hitting or surpassing government renewable energy targets.

Having worked in the offshore wind industry for over 47 years, UK-based Mech-Tool Engineering has built up a breadth of knowledge in the field. Supplying a full turnkey service to some of the biggest companies and projects all over the world, MTE has established itself as a leader of fire and blast solutions to both the onshore and offshore energy markets with many clients based in the North Sea.
